ASPIRE in Math Team


Principal Investigator: Sean Larsen
Lil Sean

Sean is a professor in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. Sean’s scholarly activity is focused on the teaching and learning of advanced mathematics. He especially likes to do instructional design work that draws on the Theory of Realistic Mathematics Education.

Lil Kristen

Kristen is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Michigan State University. Her research aims to transform undergraduate classrooms to support students' engagement in mathematical practices such as defining and conjecturing.

Stephen Strand

Lil Steve

Steve is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at CSU, Chico. His research in undergraduate Mathematics Education is primarily focused on developing inquiry-oriented, student-centered instructional sequences for proof-based math courses using the design theory of Realistic Mathematics Education. This research blends his passions for mathematics, understanding student thinking, and pedagogy.

Lil Mark

Mark is a full-time mathematics instructor at Clackamas Community College. One of Mark’s passions is supporting two-year college mathematics majors, mathematics minors, and future mathematics teachers in their transition to four-year institutions.

Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo

Lil Tenchita

Tenchita is a Research Associate at Portland State University. She completed her PhD in Mathematics Education in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. Her current research focuses on studying classroom activity in inquiry-oriented undergraduate mathematics courses, particularly proof-based courses. Some of her work also investigates the use of technology in these courses.

David Brown

Lil David

David is a part-time Graduate Research Assistant working on a PhD in Mathematics Education in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. He is interested in students generalizing activity both individually and collectively. More dissertation details forthcoming!

Brittney Ellis

Lil Brittney

Brittney (Bea) is an Assistant Professor at Texas State University and completed her PhD in Mathematics Education in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University. Her current research is on classroom discourse practices to support small group work and whole-class discussion with an emphasis on equity, power, and positioning.

Lil Adam

Adam is a Graduate Research Assistant working towards a PhD in Mathematics Education at Oregon State University. His dissertation is still in the developmental stages so more details hopefully soon!
